Concise Guide For Restoring Missing Tooth/Teeth

Causes of missing tooth/teeth can be classified under two broad heading. Congenital (due to developmental/genetic causes) or Acquired (due to various external factors, i.e. trauma, extraction, etc).

Congenitally missing teeth are usually associated with various syndromes. The diagnosis of these syndromes is necessary to treat other medical conditions. The extent of missing teeth from range from single tooth to complete absence of teeth. The condition where a few teeth are present or few teeth missing is called as partial anodontia and when non of the teeth are present is called as complete anodontia. The terms used are for general understanding. Various classifications are available on the number of teeth missing, but lets not get in to that.

The treatment for partial anodontia usually depends on the number of teeth missing and the support provided by the teeth that are present. In case where a single tooth or two teeth are missing, a fixed partial denture i.e. a bridge or implant treatment can replace the missing tooth/teeth restoring the form and function. In certain cases where orthodontic treatment can close the space and modification of tooth for will restore the aesthetic i.e. appearance. When multiple teeth are missing, in case of short spaces a fixed partial denture serves the purpose. where as when larger spaces are present, other options such as removable partial denture (cast partial dentures), and/or implant treatment is necessary.

Orthodontic treatment for closing space of missing tooth

The acquired cases of missing teeth are caries, trauma, gum disease (periodontal problems), dental personnel negligence, compromised judgment of dental personnel, extraction due to any reason. Invariably what ever may be the reason for missing tooth/teeth, the treatment usually is limited to fixed/ removable partial denture or implant treatment.
When the implant treatment is decided to replace missing tooth/teeth, the procedure includes placing a biocompatibly material in the prepared bone site. As it is placed in the bone, the quality and quantity of the underlying bone is critical. In case of insufficient bone, bone augmentation procedure could be done by the help of bone graft to improve bone bulk.
Usually in cases where congenitally tooth/teeth are missing, the amount of bone is always insufficient; also in long standing edentulous space the same condition is valid. Thus bone augmentation procedure is necessary
